Artemis Fowl is a brilliant boy genius who is both adversary and ally of the fairy civilization. He has Irish ancestors, dark hair, blue eyes, very pale skin, and with a history of crime, a loyal manservant and bodyguard called Butler, millions of dollars at his disposal, and one of the highest IQ levels in the world. He is the only known human to have read the Book, taken from a fairy. He first captures Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon (a division of the Lower Elements Police) with the help of his faithful manservant, Butler. By the strength of his mind and manservant, he ends up with a load of gold, a cured mother, and unrequisited knowledge about the People: Knowledge he is sure to exploit in the future. The series watches Artemis develop from a calculating criminal to a young man with acknowledged, though controlled, emotions.
